The great Decemberists were gone for far too long, but Black Prairie comfort us temporarily over this vacancy. Four members of this group form the backbone of Black Prairie, first and foremost the distinctive singer and accordionist Jenny Conlee. Even violinist Annalisa Tornfeldt was a guest at the Decabrists. In other words, Black Prairie are the Decemberists without their frontman Colin Meloy.

Brian Blade covers a wide spectrum. He drums for Wayne Shorter and Wolfgang Muthspiel, but also for Joni Mitchell, Daniel Lanois and Bob Dylan. Blade is perhaps the gentlest drummer in jazz history to combine the virtues of Paul Motian and Jack DeJohnette. He brings all these qualities to his band Fellowship.

Time that was shortened a little with interim stuff like the album "Fragments Of A Prayer" and the EP "The Silent Cry". Now, almost three years later, the concept of two albums finally comes to an end with "Sacrifice & Isolation".

The Californian foursome also kidnaps its listeners with its fourth album into the seventies, sometimes even a decade further back. Each one of the ten songs was so lovingly trimmed to old that one would like to give in to the illusion that one had discovered a lost band from the heyday of super-reliable blues rock. Anyone who does this kind of retro is, of course, almost conjuring up comparisons. "Electric Man" features a guitar riff and solo that Jimi Hendrix could have come up with; the vocals are a bit reminiscent of Hendrix's voice, but also contain Rory-Gallagher parts.
In die siebziger, stellenweise auch noch ein Jahrzehnt weiter zurück entführt der kalifornische Vierer seine Zuhörer auch mit seinem vierten Album. Jeder einzelne der zehn Songs wurde so liebevoll auf alt getrimmt, dass man sich gern der Illusion hingibt, man hätte eine verschollene Band aus der Hochphase des superlässigen Bluesrock entdeckt. Wer derart auf Retro macht, beschwört natürlich Vergleiche geradezu herauf.

However, it is not so well known that there is a real model for this frightening vortex, which is thematized in Jules Verne's novel "20,000 Miles Under the Sea" and Edgar Allan Poe's narrative "Down into the Maelstrom": the Mosque Traumen, which lies between the Norwegian Lofoten Islands.
