"Only the three of us in one room making noise," is how Esben And The Witch describe the content of their new album. Back to simplicity, back to the essential behind the songs, that's what you could call it. Accordingly, the trio from the English Brighton have done without overdubs and loops, as they could still be heard on the two previous albums, and with Steve Albini they have been able to bring on board a producer legend who is able to capture the magic of the moment. Esben And The Witch captured above all the interplay between intimate moments and unbridled power. The most fitting example of this is "Dig Your Fingers In", which begins with a timid acoustic guitar and the voice of singer Rachel Davies, but then suddenly falls into rough, mangy rock. No Dog" also masters these contrasts. This is sometimes reminiscent of the Japanese Boris. This style ripens to full bloom in the two longtracks "Press Heavenwards" and "The Jungle". Here the band takes its time and oscillates pleasurably, skilfully and soulfully between the extremes.
