The Berlin pianist Johanna Borchert is known from various bands in which she tested the intersections of jazz and pop. With her solo project she is far away from the sound of the capital city. Already the cover suggests desert, the first song has the title "Desert Road". Borchert, who here not only presses keys but also sings, escapes the urban narrowness and reaches for wide spaces. Her line-up is top-class with Fred Frith, Shahzad Ismaily and Julian Pastorius, but she manages to form her renowned guests into an integral band. Timbre and performance are reminiscent of a mixture of Tori Amos and Nico, the sound of the electronic keyboards in particular is more avant-garde. Some are epically rolled out, others sound like torsos. This contrast of fragment and completion runs through the whole album. A beautiful record, sometimes disturbing in its play of closeness and distance.
