When you go to Tucson, Arizona as a Swiss trio to record your debut with Jim Waters, the producer of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Sonic Youth, it shows a lot of his self-confidence. Guitarist and singer Manuel Bissig, bassist Lukas Kurmann and drummer Simon Gautsch really don't need to hide. With most of their 13 tracks, they balance on the fine line between collecting quotations and self-realization. Especially the heroes of the late sixties like The Doors and Jimi Hendrix are going through some songs ("Wasted Blood", "Head In The Clouds", "Eye Of The Storm"). On the other hand, each piece gains independence with increasing playing time. That doesn't necessarily mean that they can come up with smarter solutions than their colleagues forty-five years ago. Especially when it's too "easy" and too Rock'n'Roll-like ("Sugar Boogie"), you even doubt the greatness of the group for a moment. In this line of work, The Brew are better. Sons Of Morpheus always have their strengths when they can really turn off.
