When Johnny Winter died in July in a hotel room in Zurich, it was of course a sad event because of the human winter. On the other hand it was foreseeable, because the Texan had to be more or less "carried" on stage in the last years. His concerts and even more the interviews with him became more and more sad experiences than informative or exciting. Why this talented guitarist wasn't just allowed to spend his last years on a Texas porch made many people more and more angry. "Step Back" is, so to speak, the continuation of "Roots", an album that deals with songs from the fifties. But it has to be said: Despite an illustrious crowd of guests from Billy Gibbons to Joe Bonamassa and Joe Perry to Leslie West and Eric Clapton, it is an absolutely superfluous work, because nobody really needs these unimaginative versions of these outstanding musicians. So it is completely irrelevant if, for example, Brian Setzer accelerates on the instrumental "Okie Dokie Stomp".
