Christmas is yesterday's news. But the next feast will certainly come. And I'm sure this sampler will make it a little more contemplative. "Psych-Out Christmas", despite its name, is not a pure psych album. Rather, you'll find sixties beat, dirty garage rock, some blues, a little spacer rock and even lively pop. But all 17 songs have a wink and a good portion of irony. Mostly unknown names, bands that already attracted attention (like The Movements, Dead Meadow, Sleepy Sun) and a big one (Iggy Pop) gather here to give well-known Christmas songs a new outfit. Quintron & Miss Pussycat interpret "Silent Night" on an organ, accompanied by percussion and blubber. HE 5 try their hand at "Jingle Bells" in beat dress. The Fuzztones ask "Hey Santa Claus, what have you got in your bag?". "Frosty The Snowman by The Candy Store seems to have sprung directly from a 60s US family comedy. And Santa Claus on page one of the booklet is a feast for the eyes.
