Michael and David Champion from Great Britain show a very fine feeling for old fashioned melodies. Their spectrum ranges from the 80s Don-Henley feeling ("Only A Bullet ...") to odd 50s Western film music ("Pretty Much (Since Last November)") to Fleedwood Mac bonds ("My Spirit Is Broken"). The two fish in similar indie waters like Bon Iver or Brad Murphy. A lot of acoustic guitar, organ sounds, a rather soft instrumentation all in all screw up their voices to astonishing heights - which also works great for most of them. An exception is perhaps the somewhat whining "8 mm Desire", which reconciles with a beautiful melody. A preference for the sound of singing voices in cathedrals, for the early R.E.M. and the Beatles, the brothers admit in the band info. All this can be found in the ten tracks. Hopefully, the champions will continue to demonstrate the standing qualities that this debut will suggest.
