Krokofant is one of the most unusual jazz trios currently on the starting grid. In contrast to most of their colleagues, the three Norwegians do without a bass player and ignite a whirlwind in the line-up guitar/saxophone/drums, with which no eye remains dry. Guitarist Tom Hasslan ("Our Mission: More Prog for the People!") seals everything down with fat riffs, so you rarely miss a four-string. Saxophonist Jørgen Mathisen produces anarchic, wild solos on top of this and fetches sounds from his instrument that a jazz police would drive onto the barricades. There is often nothing more to be felt of Wohlklang here, because Krokofant is all about the pleasurable deconstruction of loved listening habits. Therefore this CD sounds as if Sonic Youth have reformed themselves and are now rocking the house as a free jazz combo, despite existing prog elements. Examples of this are the "Polyfant" and "Bodega", which are characterized by minute-long sax and guitar attacks. With "Castaway", however, crocofants show that they also master the quieter profession.
