Savoy Brown was a great blues band in the sixties and early seventies with gigantic songs like "Hellbound Train". Mastermind Kim Simmonds has recorded a new studio album with bassist Pat DeSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm in Syracuse, New York, on which he presents himself vocally and with regard to his guitar work in top form. The variety is also great with jazz blues ("When You've Got A Good Time"), shuffle ("Cobra") reminiscent of ZZ Top, atmospheric slow blues with soulful solos ("Just A Dream") and a number with Tex-Mex rhythms ("Going Back"). Only Deltablues is missing. However, the production looks pretty smooth and the drums often seem to have been recorded with a metronome. A little more sixties-looseness would have fit perfectly to this music.
