There are these records where you ask yourself what the artist wants to convey to you with them, whether he feels a part of any style, of any movement. Or did he just do what came to his mind, inspired by what was on the turntable lately? Jimi Goodwin is by no means a stranger. He and his band have been pretty good at Doves over the last decade and have even produced at least two excellent albums. "Odludek", by the way, comes from Polish and means "lonely pilgrim". That's exactly how Goodwin wants to be understood. Thus he wades through all styles from folk to electronica to soul and pop. He cites Prince as his role model and also reminds us of a Nineties rave band, of the Talking Heads, of a lonely singer-songwriter. At some point even Elbow's Guy Garvey comes around the corner and sings along with "Panic Tree". Whether the album is a complex masterpiece, which you have to work for first, or a thrown together, directionless something, will probably have to show itself yet. At first, there's just a lot of confusion.
