Ten years ago this kind of music was the hot thing: hectic guitars, dull, monotonous drum beats (or drum computers), a singer oscillating between hysteria and coolness. Bands like Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party shaped the sound of the new millennium and soon disappeared from the scene (even though they're still all there somehow). But why the young Germans of NEWMEN take this trampled out path remains their secret. Because they can add nothing to this kind of music about which everything has already been said. On the contrary, most songs bubble away without even developing an original idea. Of course there are melodic moments here and there when you wish the band had chosen a more analog, more restrained sound. Perhaps she would have moved more confidently in a less exalted musical environment. At any rate, talent shines through every now and then.
