BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY - Singer's Grave A Sea Of Tongues

Kategorie: CD-Reviews | Genre: Singer-Songwriter | Heft: Jahrgang 2014, eclipsed Nr. 165 / 11-2014 | VÖ-Jahr: 2014 | Wertung: 8/10 | Label: Domino | Autor: SaS

The hipness factor of the bearded songwriter from Kentucky increases with every new record. The last, self-titled album, one of his best ever, he had pressed himself (only on LP and MC), carried to a few stores in his home Kentucky and sold a few copies at his concerts. This does not earn money, but the attention factor increases immeasurably. Now it's another album on his regular label Domino. Unlike on the spartan "Wolfroy Goes To Town" he plays with a full band, partly also newly arranged tracks of the "Wolfroy" album in country versions. As you already know from "Greatest Palace Music", these new inventions are an important part of his creative self-image. All in all one has to state that the countryesque flair is good for all compositions and reminds of the dark odes of a town Van Zandt. Even if you might feel deterred by the hype around Will Oldham, his songwriting, his arrangements and his whole aesthetic concept have substance, which he proves once more impressively. Apropos hipness factor: Of course the album is also available on MC.
