CARL VERHEYEN - Mustang Run

Carl Verheyen, guitarist at Supertramp, has put together a competent team for his latest album, which is also enriched by guest musicians. Among others Dave Marotta and Stuart Hamm on bass, Chad Wackerman and Simon Phillips on drums and Jim Cox on keys. Of course they are all capable musicians, but in their interplay they have the "deficit" of all too great accuracy. Instead of letting the songs live, you pay attention to metronome accuracy, which can also be said of Verheyen's guitar playing. Melodic rock ("Mustang Run"), smooth fusion ("Fourth Door On The Right"), jazz blues reminiscent of Danny Gatton ("Taylor's Blues") and acoustic-based harmony rock ("Julietta And The St. George") are imaginative, creative and full of solos not only from the boss, but also from his renowned colleagues. The sterile recording makes it all sound all too often like an advertising clip or calming background music at the dentist. Too bad.
