Hemina master more than just the usual Dream Theater keyboard. The Australians already proved this on their debut "Synthetic" (2012). With "Nebulae", the quartet around Anubis guitarist Douglas Skene, who, in contrast to the rather dreamy seventies approach of his main band, lives out his passion for more pithy sounds here, but develops it further. The band has become harder, and the vocal arrangements have moved even further into the foreground (Skene is also great as a singer, even reminiscent of Daniel Gildenlöw in high registers). Especially the background vocals of bassist Jessica Martin are now more and more in focus. In the harder passages, the sharp reefs even allow for comparison in Djents ("Loss", "Strength"). With "Lust" one moves beyond that into jazz and funkfilden. The whole creative power culminates in the enormously diverse elfminüter "Otherwordly". "Nebulae" (a concept album about clear dreams and transcendence) definitely offers a seldom heard mix of styles, but it doesn't brim over the complete distance with compositional brilliance.
