Meg Baird is the lead singer of the indie folk band Espers from Philadelphia, which is strongly oriented to the folk of the late sixties. This lady is now offering her second solo album for sale. "Babylon" continues the tradition of Simon & Garfunkel with fingerpicking style, even if a steel guitar establishes the connection to the American country. That the Baird is not a musical lightweight is shown by five tracks that loosely cross the six-minute mark. With "Stars Climb Up The Vine" she tailors with reduced means (guitars, steel guitar, dobro) a wonderfully psychedelic garment, in which it can be perfectly sleepwalked on rooftops. Her tender voice is reminiscent of Sandy Denny or Pentangles Jacqui McShee. And in "Even Rain" she actually purrs like an elf. "Friends" is a songwriter's good that doesn't really exist in this form anymore, as is the beautiful "Beatles And The Stones" (cover of House Of Love). Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Joan Beaz are very close here. "Stream" trumps countryesk-orchestral again at the end.
