The Canadian Kathleen Edwards does a lot live with Justin Vernon alias Bon Iver. Her new album could mean an international breakthrough for her - the swinging opener "Empty Threat" with the hookline chorus "I'm Moving To America" brings out pleasant memories of Suzanne Vega's best times. This is Neofolk that sticks. Songs like the furious "Chameleon/Comedian" are commercial in the best sense of the word without being chummy. With the Vega (and also Heather Nova) she has above all the bell-clear voice in common, but not the sound design, which reminds more of Sheryl Crow and younger colleagues like Amy Macdonald. The fact that she can also elegantly cross the deep valley of modern Americana is proven by the quieter tracks "A Soft Place To Land" and "Pink Champagne", which shine with swollen guitars and ghostly sounds. "Change The Sheets" and "Going To Hell" even walk confidently between U2 and Coldplay. "Mint" gets into West Coast Tom Petty skirt. Surprisingly strong album with depth.
