Michael Landau belongs to the ranks of US session musicians whose order list is as long as a telephone book. Pink Floyd, Steve Lukather, Chicago, Quincy Jones, were among his clients. On his new solo album, the man from L.A. presents ten instrumentals that don't sound as smooth as one might fear from such a savvy US session pro as he is. In the opener, Landau is at first as relaxed as Eric Clapton on "MTV Unplugged", playing the acoustic guitar. There is also an effectively operated drum. Then the highly atmospheric organ and electric guitar come into play. That's a lovely number. "Sneaker Wave" is putting on a fat tooth. The bass hits the pit of the stomach and the stubbornly distorted electric guitar performs somersaults. "Spider Time is lascivious midtempo blues. Other tracks oscillate between onomatopoeic atmo-jazz and quite violent guitar attacks. Perfect sounds when you want to get a grip on your thoughts between anger, forlornness and longing, drunk late at night. A relaxed flugelhorn in "Big Sur Howl" fits like a fist to the eye.
