Anaïs Mitchell stands alone in the ranks of unconventional American singer-songwriters because she skilfully avoids any cliché. She is unique because she applies the motto "Think Different" to every conceivable area of her idiosyncratic art. Their compositions are complex, but always melodic, their songs unusual, sometimes almost avant-garde orchestrated and develop mostly in directions that the listener does not expect. Her conceptual thinking also has a decisive influence on her texts: Two years ago she presented "Hadestown", a kind of folk opera about Orpheus and Eurydice, and on "Young Man In America" she drew smaller character sketches. But they've got it in them. Every track surprises, musically as well as lyrically. The use of flute and clarinet as dominant instruments in numerous songs alone is an unusual master stroke. So Anaïs Mitchell presents an unconventional and yet melodic and always appealing album.
