Birds Of Passage, the solo enterprise of Alicia Merz, managed the balancing act between singer-songwriter and infinitely slow sound landscapes. Brother Sun, Sister Moon, the new project of the New Zealander, which she runs together with Gareth Munday of Roof Light, is a bit different. What makes the difference are the many digital sounds and field recordings that have pushed her voice into the background. The singing in super slow motion is just another timbre. The electronics are sometimes funky and playful, sometimes just indefinable noises, sometimes they condense to warm harmonies, sometimes to broad drones. Another sound component of this idiosyncratic music are the acoustic guitars. These three parts often fit together perfectly. Often it isn't. Surely the listening habits should be deliberately disturbed and the listener should be startled on purpose. But do you always like it? This debut album always surprises, only positively and negatively. The eleven tracks are art without a doubt, though not necessarily big ones.
