Every five or ten years pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton meet for a duet. Their first two joint albums "Duet" and "Crystal Silence", recorded in the seventies for ECM, are milestones of a subtle yet somehow rebellious comic-like Chamber Jazz. On their new rendezvous "Hot House" you can feel the intimate familiarity of the two ancestors. There's a magic that makes it seem unimportant which idea comes from the keys and which from the plates. You can fully indulge in this warm, organic sound and enjoy it like a life-giving summer rain. What is missing is the shrewd brilliance of the composition. Chick Corea himself is far too original a composer to be able to descend on a standard album, however successful the interpretations may be. The range extends from the Beatles via Jobim and Weill to Brubeck and Monk. Sure, Burton and Corea want to show where they come from, but isn't that clear anyway? Much more interesting would be the question where they go with this luggage and their incredible life experience. Hopefully they'll quickly put another album with exciting originals after this cozy fireplace hour.
