Cross have been active in the Swedish prog scene since the late eighties. Also on "Wake Up Call", their ninth studio CD, mastermind Hansi Cross is responsible for vocals, guitars and keyboards, while Lollo Andersson pushes the mostly overlong songs with his powerful bass playing. The "Human Resolution" opener already sets the direction: Here the rock is not too contemplative, but with healthy hardness, whereby the portamento synth sounds clearly refer to Tony Banks and Keith Emerson. Falling Beyond" also succeeded with a growling bass and a side trip into the fusion prog. In between Cross insert two instrumentals, of which the polychord garnished "Racing Spirits" is Sweden's answer to Rush's "YYZ". The eighteen-minute "Waking Up" shows the dilemma of the album: Cross have many good ideas and harmony sequences in their luggage, but sometimes they should be developed over a longer period of time. In addition, some instrumental passages are not necessarily compelling and therefore lack a greater tension curve.
