He has played with Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, John Zorn and Tom Waits, written jazz history with the Lounge Lizards and Jazz Passengers, and initiated projects of all kinds. Marc Ribot is one of the most versatile guitarists in the universe. With his band Ceramic Dog he now plays Rock in a spectrum between Nirvana and Television. On "Party Intellectuals", the band's first album, Ribot seemed a little bashful, which was especially noticeable in his vocals. On the new CD he now accelerates with every cell of his body. His guitar playing is as asymmetrical and bumpy as ever. But the grooves are straight and his vocals are highly offensive. He has understood what rock is all about: not only powerful guitars, but also gripping riffs, catchy hooks and a crisp dramaturgical bow. The absolute hit of the album is his punk version of Paul Desmond's jazz classic "Take Five", which has probably never been hit on the boards with so much power before. The fact that Ribot actually comes from jazz is only marginally noticeable here.
