Living By Lanterns is a young big band from Chicago around vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, who is dedicated to the music of Sun Ra. According to reports, "New Myth/Old Science" are pieces that Sun Ra himself failed to record. It fits the theme that the actual origin of the pieces remains in the dark. A myth about a myth. Musically, Living By Lanterns is much more accomplished than the Sun Ra Arkestra ever was. But that's not the point. The legend of the ingenious charlatan, who died 20 years ago, lives on and casts its shadows. It groovs, hisses and smashes, but the sounds are only partly reminiscent of the original. Anyway. Even without the Sun Ra superstructure, "New Myth/Old Science" is an encouraging example of a progressive post-big-band sound that is very close to Rob Mazurek's formations Chicago Underground and Exploding Star Orchestra.
