Radiohead have been enjoying steadily growing popularity in jazz circles for several years now: Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter and Robert Glasper, among others, have radically reinterpreted songs by the English quintet. On "Head Radio Retransmissions" the German label ESC Records now presents a fascinating compilation of 25 tracks, which also illuminate the phenomenon Radiohead from a jazz perspective, including a cover version of Thom Yorkes "Analyse" as well as three original compositions of the participating artists (excellent: "House Without A Door" by the Le Boeuf Brothers). Especially noteworthy are the following musicians: Bob Reynolds recorded "Creep" in overdub as a pseudo saxophone trio, Julio Resende transcends "Airbag" and also reaches inside the grand piano, Jake Sharp brings "Karma Police" as a relaxed bossa number in Bill Friselle style and the emoticons give "No Surprises" the necessary momentum. Absolute world class is Yuri Honing's version of "Paranoid Android", in which arranger Vince Mendoza provides for chamber music intimacy and orchestral smack.
