Most recently, Norwegian pianist Ketil Björnstad had dedicated himself to projects at the crossroads between jazz and classical music. On his new CD he once again practices the discipline he masters best, the excessive storytelling, in which he draws on a rich palette of stylistic means ranging from ambient to chamber music and jazz to pro rock and soundtrack-like programme music. "La Notte" is - who is surprised about this title? - an impressive ode to the night and at the same time a lovingly set tone poem. The pianist pulls out all the stops to trigger nocturnes crackling and enjoys the prominent support of a European all-star squad of Andy Sheppard, Anna Lechner, Arild Andersen, Eivind Aarset and Marilyn Mazur. "La Notte" is just as suitable as unobtrusive background music for certain hours from Dusk to Dawn as for the exclusive examination of the sound images of the night.
