Is this still jazz? Or already a DJ set? The Portico Quartet, based in London, once again crumbles away their established listening habits and comes right to the point live. With samples, synths, saxophone, double bass, drums and hang drum the instrumentation of the quartet is more than extraordinary. With a track like "City Of Glass" the musicians collapse appropriately in the Jazz'n'Dance cosmos, before the long lasting "Rubidium/ Line" serves a little the Minimal Music and thus also Steve Reich. In "Dawn Patrol" saxophonist Jack Wyllie shows that he is also at home in free jazz. And thanks to the Swedish singer Cornelia Dahlgren, who lives in London, "Steepless" brings something like a Björk song aspect into the broad sound of the Portico Quartet. In addition to a complete gig from his 2012 tour, the double album contains a remix CD, on which exquisite Portico quartet material experiences an exciting reappraisal by colleagues such as Scratcha DVA, Luke Abbott, Will Ward and Sbtrkt.
