While the American composer and sound installer Jeff Greinke has always recorded his previous albums solo and purely electronically, "Scenes From A Train" marks a turning point in his career. He has gathered 13 musicians around him. The best known of these was certainly drummer and percussionist Michael Shrieve (who played with Santana from 1969 to 1974, including at the Woodstock Festival). All these musicians add string instruments, percussion, bass, trumpet, clarinet and guitar to Greinke's piano miniatures and digital sounds. The result is ambient soundscapes with violin and trumpet ("The Beautiful Storm" or "The Milky Way"), lively tracks full of jingles and bells ("Scenes From A Train"), soft bar jazz ("Strange Birds") and Indian Oriental ("Night Train"). The highlight is the irresistible rhythm monster "Autumn Moon". Greinke manages to harmonize melancholy with a really good mood. The album is like a mixture of Yann Tiersen and the quiet representatives on the Canadian indie label Constellation.
