The title of the first vanity longplayer suggests that things are a little dark or black-magic here. On the other hand the band around their Palestinian singer N rocks hard and shows affinities to Type O Negative and Sisters Of Mercy ("Vision Thing"). The concept, which is based on a never published novel of the frontman, is also Gothrock in pure culture. Why should what used to be the thing par excellence work less well today, seems the Vanity motto. Everything actually fits together here: Toughness that sometimes drifts into the metallic, a lot of pathos and suspense and a lot of drama. But the bottom line is that everything that is staged here also has a certain hit appeal. It's not that Vanity is now making Gothic Rock socially acceptable over a wide range, that's still reserved for HIM. But the band flirts with pleasing structures. Already "Sleeping Tears", the first single, makes an impression with meandering guitars and pumping basses. But with "The Wanderer" Vanity is also really pulling out of the leather.
