The Quireboys are powerful in form. Like when they started to dominate the English pubs not only from the bar. The focus is on Spikes' rubbing iron tube. With some tracks, especially "Chain Smokin'", one suspects that shortly before the end of the song his voice would fail. But he'll probably be going through the clubs with it for another twenty years, drinking, smoking and giving off mangy hard rock-affine rock'n'roll numbers. Rarely since the 1990s debut LP "A Bit Of What You Fancy" with the hits "7 O'Clock", "I Don't Love You Anymore" and "Hey You" have they got it so on the line as on "Beautiful Curse". The hymnal ballad "Mother Mary" is particularly successful. She has not only something of the often mentioned role models The Faces and the Stones. She could also have been a song written by Ian Hunter for Mott The Hoople. But the album already starts with the racy track "Too Much Of A Good Thing" very promising. "Beautiful Curse" is the strongest Quireboys album since 1990 and the ideal soundtrack for the next booze tour with buddies.
