The Afghan Whigs' class reunion is one of those few band reunions that can be regarded as absolutely successful. Singer Greg Dulli and his companions have risen from the ashes of their band after a 16 year break. The band started at the end of the eighties in the grunge circle and until shortly before the turn of the millennium had become one of the most important institutions of white soul. The result is a furious apotheosis. On "Do To The Beast" the Whigs recapitulate all phases of their band history and extrapolate them to something new. Like the opener "Parked Outside" is a cracking rock song that brings the best of the nineties back to life. And "Algiers" is a dark soul number that would have done well on an album by Joan As Police Woman. The arrangements are detailed and sophisticated, the hooks stirring and the short solos to the point. In spite of the diversity of the songs, a red thread runs through the CD. On their reunion album the Afghan Whigs turn out to be grandiose all-rounders, standing in line with bands like Flaming Lips or Primal Scream.
