Billy Hart is a primal rock of the jazz drum set. Since the sixties he has played with Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. More recently we know him with the Weilheimer Tied & Tickled Trio, among others. On "All Our Reasons" he gets up to his great late work. In a generational dialogue with saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus and bassist Ben Street, he paints nine soul landscapes of depth that are difficult to grasp, because crystalline transparency and impenetrability complement each other here. The quartet in classical jazz line-up leaves the traditional dramaturgy of jazz far behind. Instead, it can be carried away on a spiritual stream with numerous side arms and a widely ramified delta. The pulse coming from the drums is magical. He takes the other voices with him without imposing himself on them. Every moment is full of inspiration. "All Our Reasons" is absolutely timeless music that culminates in the here and now.
