Jasmine Van den Bogaerde? Just fifteen years old, the precocious offspring of a concert pianist under the charming stage name Birdy has hit the UK charts with her Bon Iver cover of "Skinny Love". This little song is played completely unpretentiously. Just voice and piano. The first album consists almost exclusively of new interpretations. Which doesn't matter, because Birdys versions have their own fragile character. The opener "1901" wallows in piano, reserved electronics and of course the voice, which doesn't seem childish at all, but rather a sensitive mixture of Fiona Apple and Melanie. The combative-appellative "People Help The People" reminds of blessed flower-power times and convinces with crystal-clear piano chords, a voluptuous cello and a rousing voice. "I'll Never Forget You" charming with feminine magic between Kate Bush and Tori Amos. "Young Blood has the perfect electropop appeal. "Fire And Rain" (James Taylor) is evidence of songwriting tradition consciousness. One can only hope that this young talent will not be bent or destroyed by the music industry.
