Like every good novel begins with a good sentence, every good album starts with a great sound or an irresistible riff. The Black Keys are doing everything right on their new album. The guitar intro of the opener "Lonely Boy" is the best invitation a band can issue for an album. After various Blues, Prog, HipHop and Soul excursions Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have now arrived in Glamrock, which they put with a shot of Punk and a pinch of Ska. T. Rex say hello, The Clash provided some guitar riffs, Led Zeps "Stairway To Heaven" became "Little Black Submarines" at the Black Keys, but also bands like the early Deep Purple, The Gun, Peter Frampton or Fischer-Z left their mark here. "El Camino" is compressed good mood on the highest level. Each song has single quality. The production of Danger Mouse, who also used keyboards and wrote the songs here, is fat and round. The Black Keys have fully internalized the power and lard of the Seventies and make their own rhyme about it. A successful album in every respect.
