The last Hold Steady album "Heaven Is Whenever" already hinted at it: Craig Finn has had enough of rumple rock and is looking for quieter sounds to bring his lyrical word cascades to the listener. But what rarely worked with his band - concerning the quiet tones - Finn now succeeds on his first solo album, which he recorded with a number of rental musicians in only three weeks: short stories turned into songs, which at the same time go to the heart and inspire reflection. Of course, the - strongly countryesque - music is rather only the necessary accompaniment to transport Finns dark contents. Once again it's about loneliness, too much alcohol, religious fanaticism and the classic rock records that shape the lives of his underclass protagonists. A professional youth in his mid-thirties is still sitting with his parents in the apartment and constantly hears Ozzy's "Bark At The Moon". A frustrated woman can only sleep with lights on. Another one finally finds her boyfriend for life - Jesus. No light food, but once again so laconically presented by Finn that you just have to listen. Even though the hard guitars and the sparkling Springsteen piano are sometimes quite missing.
