The last Eels album "Wonderful, Glorious" isn't quite dry yet, so the workaholic E is already adding the next album. "The Cautionary Tales Of Mark Oliver Everett" is the antithesis of the rough predecessor, calm, balladic, thoughtful, elaborately arranged. Not only the sound, but also the melody is reminiscent of late Beatles albums. E buries itself deep in pop history to seduce the ear once more with a collection of beguilingly beautiful song pearls. His singing seems a little more tortured than usual, especially since he is clearly more in the foreground, but in view of the sophisticated sound environments this contrast is all the more effective. The badly clumsy lyrics stand in a wonderful contrast to the relaxed melodies. In the special edition, a bonus disc is added to the regular album. In addition to a few superfluous outtakes, of which it quickly becomes clear why E could do without them in the first gear, there are also a few live songs from the last tour, above all the outstanding version of the Fleetwood Mac classic "Oh Well", which the Eels turn into a body-own blast with an impressively casual passion.
