From Marillion's hometown of Aylesbury comes a quartet that fills the gap left by the resting Porcupine Tree. A year ago, Flicker released their debut album, which is now also available from us. After the opener, the rocky "Go" actually brings PT's "In Absentia" sound back to the wallpaper, even though singer Ellis Mordecai sounds different than Steven Wilson. At least here. Because the following soft piece "Out There" would probably intonate Wilson similarly. "My Empty Head" impresses with fine string and keyboard lines. "Counting Time is wonderfully psychedelic and playful. "Everywhere Face" and "Breathless" are rockier again, but also radiate this PT charm, which is created from certain harmonies and moods. At the end there is a little "Raven"-feeling with the piano ballad "Is This The Real Life" with its restrained, reverberant vocals and filigree strings. Please don't misunderstand: Flicker are more like Porcupine Tree than other bands in terms of sound, mood and song structure. But they already stand on their own two feet with their original, characterful debut.
