GERD WEYHING - Journey To Impossible Places

Kategorie: CD-Reviews | Genre: Prog, Ambient | Heft: Jahrgang 2014, eclipsed Nr. 165 / 11-2014 | VÖ-Jahr: 2014 | Wertung: 8/10 | Label: Schrottland | Autor: WS

With "The Hidden Symmetry" Gerd Weyhing had given a fine visiting card to his drone and loop soundscapes. Now there is a rich continuation with this double CD. Five longtracks made it as a whole. "Forbidden Tracks" unfolds gently, like a carefully planned hike through an archaic Asian high mountain range. The cutting guitar that slides between the percussive sounds lies in the tone between Mike Oldfield and Edgar Froese, but she also dares to enter disharmonic territory. This crackling ethno tension is maintained for 32 minutes without falling into platitudes. Real mental ear cinema. "Cryptomeria" is darker and more aggressive, the guitar gives out electric lashes. The shimmering "The Realm of the Black Fish" could inspire Mike Oldfield to new instrumental greatness, if you take the beaten guitar tone as a yardstick. "Landscape And Memory" is more symphonic, with flatter sounds. Progressive Ambient like here you rarely get as demanding a preexercise. A stroke of luck.
