You really don't want to admit it to yourself, but King's X have lost a lot of punch in recent years. With just as many musical ulterior motives, but with much more rage in their stomach, the Trio Ill on "Gotten Gains" celebrates a modern heavy rock that neither puts on nor takes off everything. And that's what it's always been about in this way, be it initiated by Black Sabbath or later picked up as a powerful grunge by Soundgarden. In the more sensitive moments ("Christine") you get a feeling for what Jon Spencer Blues Explosion always had in mind, but what they never really succeeded in doing. This power trio on the other hand combines punk, blues and early Aerosmith without any effort. And it seems it doesn't matter what Ill touches, they break the shackles and limits and don't stay in the rough. In their melodic moments ("Bitch") this can tend towards Skunk Anansie, but also here King's X can be heard again and again, without being copied by Ill. A deeply digging work that cries out for attention.
