Julian Casablancas has always been a good songwriter, but lately he has lacked the right touch for the adequate environment of his pieces. The last albums of the Strokes just seemed helpless. With his new sextet The Voidz he now seems to find his way back to the old track. Of course the band is still missing the crispness of the early Strokes albums, but at least Casablancas knows again where he wants to go. His vocal spectrum has become richer, and in addition to the usual cold-bloodedness, a good piece of White Soul has been added. The rebellious pose of the album, on the other hand, seems a bit troubled. You just don't want to buy the underground from the ex-stroke in its new transformation anymore. His affinity to the New Yorker No Wave, on the other hand, seems to be honest. He can fall back far into the days before the strokes, quotes a lot of proto and post punk. "Tyranny" may not be the big litter yet, but one can only wish Mr. Casablancas enough patience. Because this band has the potential to grow.
