The bassist Julie Slick from Philadelphia could already get hold of several top-class jobs during her seven-year career, among others at Crimson ProjeKct. In return, the tanned beauty secured the services of guitarist Adrian Belew and drummer Pat Mastelotto for her second solo CD. And also luminaries like David Torn (g) and Marco Minnemann (dr) are honoured on "Terroir". With such comrades-in-arms, it's obvious that the ten tracks always get a King Crimson page, with David Torn making his mark on the dragging opener "6" with exciting avant-garde sounds. More accessible is the finely toothed "Pi", in which the circle number theme is embedded in a cosy ethno prog. The rest of the 53-minute CD can also be seen as a musical calling card of what Julie Slick has to offer. So, rather exhausting noise escapades ("Accidental Incident") alternate with crimsonesque pieces ("Kismet") and moments of beauty that have to give way to disturbing sounds ("Quintal"). Tip: the crazy wave rocker "Sirène".
