Moraine is a quintet from Seattle, which moves with violin, baritone saxophone, bass, guitar and drums largely in the triangle of Mahavishnu-infected jazz rock, grunge-influenced art rock and lyrical improvisation. The sound of the new album "Groundswell" was defined by producer Steve Fisk, a jazz career changer whose clients used to include bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden. He is responsible for the angular Seventies feeling of the band. Moraine navigate unerringly between powerful riffs, razor-sharp solos, especially on violin and guitar, as well as dreamy ethno moments. The tempo is always high, and yet there are enough moments to linger in. The band is constantly playing forward, so that you don't feel excluded as a listener at any time. In jazz, even in jazz rock, this is not exactly a matter of course and is one of the great strengths of the CD.
