Suppleness is capitalized on "Best Of Times", the third album by My Sad Captains. The London quartet doesn't hurt anyone with their nine new songs. No rough tones, often melodious, simple songs with simple rhythms and simple guitars. And always cheerful melodies that don't mope. Here, however, the focus is not on cheerfulness in a cramped way, instead everything seems casual, unclouded and relaxed. My Sad Captains are unadorned, just sprinkle in a few little treats here and there. They lack the grandiose melodies of Menomena and the dreamy of Mercury Rev. That has advantages and disadvantages: The 46-minute album sounds like a unified whole, but doesn't have a real highlight either. In the long run this is too harmless, the ingratiating vocals can also put you to sleep. Nevertheless: "Best Of Times" spreads a cosy atmosphere and the two long instrumental parts at the end of "In Time" and "Hardly There" are a real delight. The keyboard-heavy instrumental "Keeping On, Keeping On" also surprises.
