Navel should really come from Switzerland? Aren't they more from the South or Midwest of the United States? What the - indeed - Swiss quartet delivers with the first two songs of their fourth album "Songs Of Woe" is sensational: The opener "Her Land Of Love" is a hussar ride of dust-dry Americana and acoustic blues, garnished with excellent groove and melodies for half an eternity. With "The World Is On Fire" follows a dirty, electric blues with no less horny rhythm and gripping melodies. However, it was difficult to maintain this level: Garage rock, blues rock, shrill rockabilly follow quite appealing, but no longer extraordinary. Remarkable is still "Where Have You Sent" with its quiet beginning (including organ carpets) and large guitar anthems in the further course. It's rough rocked ("Way Out", "True Love Won't Let You Down"), with guitar solos everywhere, always with the wonderfully brittle voice of Jari Antti. Navel succeeds in writing a dozen good songs, a handful of which stand out.
