THE NOTWIST - Close To The Glass

The Notwist has a reputation for creating artistically valuable pop music. Yet pop alone would be far too restrictive for the creative energy of the Weilheim band. Six years break lay between the last two albums. A time that turned each of them into an artistic statement. The Notwist also took another six years for "Close To The Glass". To anticipate: They live up to their reputation once again. And yet they do not convince with the new work. The diversity of the arrangements is impressive. Some songs are played completely electronically, with cut'n'click techniques like Autechre ("Signals") or with weird sounds and rhythms ("They Follow Me"). Others present only a spartan guitar: meaningless in "Steppin' In", wonderful in "Casino". "Kong" with its fast groove and catchy melodies is something like a hitsingle, if The Notwist had a hitsingle. But the whole album remains much too arbitrary, seems more like a random composition than an artfully arranged collage. It lacks the remarkable.
