The Stockholm retro rockers Siena Root, who have meanwhile grown together to form a permanent quintet, are coming out with a new studio album after a long break. So the question inevitably arises: What happened to the psychedelic blues rock that the band used to like to stage with Sitar or Mellotron? Retro's still all this. Siena Root consciously places value on producing everything analog with original equipment. In 2014 this backward turn is regarded as progressive, which maybe explains the album title: Back to the future! The furious opener "Between The Lines" quickly makes the thrust direction clear. That was definitely more hard rock biting than Siena Root was used to. Sounds of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep but also of the early Jethro Tull are unmistakable. Especially the Hammond organ played by Erik Petersson has become more important. So she sounds like Jon Lord in "Root Rock Pioneers" including solo with Leslie Cabinet, and even the dialogue between organ and guitar is calibrated like in Purple; the same is true for the rhythmic team. Here one sings again of the violent Blues, as it was interpreted in the classical Hardrock. "Keep On Climbing" has the dark groove of Black Sabbath ready. Otherwise it rumbles and roars yesterday that it is only such a joy. Whoever wears the skirt of the seventies anchored in his system will be really happy with this disc. Old Siena root fans may mourn the psychedelic-bluesy phase of the band. But this really cool record, which transports classic rock and hard rock into the present, takes nothing. And: With the concluding, grandiosely staged longtrack "In My Kitchen" the band has something even more psychedelic to offer, including a fusion-heavy e-piano. Thumbs up!
