The 72-year-old bassist Steve Swallow has always been a sound poet. Few composers in his genre have found such a powerful language as the long-time husband of Big Band queen Carla Bley. Now he is getting older and his compositions become more melancholic. He's not betting on routine. His tracks have lost nothing of their wit and esprit. On the contrary, although purely instrumental, they are songs that you want to sing along immediately. With Carla Bley on the organ, the always great guitarist Steve Cardenas, saxophonist Chris Cheek and drummer Jorge Rossy he creates a warmth and intimacy that makes you think you're listening to the music through a magnifying glass. The influence of Carla Bley on the impressionistic timbre breaks within these intoxicatingly beautiful melodies is unmistakable. This is where the American sound aristocracy comes into its own, mischievous, reserved in its solo improvisation and yet unsurpassable in its desire to tell a story.
