The Einstürzende Neubauten are history. At least for now. But her helmsman Blixa Bargeld no longer needs his mother ship when he can conjure up a miracle like "Still Smiling" with a like-minded man like the Italian sound magician Teho Teardo. Blixa sings, Teardo plays baritone guitar and the renowned Balanescu Quartet provides a powerful chamber music sound bed. Together they explore the voids of our postmodern existence. The songs seem like mantras in which the same thematic figures are brought into play again and again. Even the multilingual approach of most numbers does not interfere. This album knows no place. It describes vividly problems of resources, identity and uprooting that are valid all over the world. The two masters of psychoacoustic drama know how to drill blast holes into the sensitivities of their listeners with their way of speaking, which has been trained by Brecht. A disturbing album in every respect, but also beautiful in its poetically haunting inevitability.
