In 2001 Tinariwens music was still something new. On their fifth album "Emmaar" the Tuaregs from northern Mali copy themselves. They follow exactly the style that they were the first to introduce and cultivate from the very beginning, and which they will hopefully continue to cultivate. Because this dust-dry rock, with its magical rhythm guitars, the North African percussion, the polyphonic vocals with exotic melodies and hypnotic grooves has lost nothing, but also nothing of its fascination. The tempo of the songs at the most provides variety here, and the guitars and voices are sometimes brighter, sometimes darker. This guarantees that there is no weak point to be found on the album that will turn into a 50-minute, entertaining journey. Meanwhile also other bands play this desert rock, Tamikrest for example. But they all have not remained as archaic as Tinariwen. However, there was one change: Because of the unrest in Mali, Tinariwen recorded outside their homeland for the first time, namely in the Californian desert town Joshua Tree.
