Anyone who fears a conventional jazz trio by the name of Trioscapes can breathe a sigh of relief. Because Dan Briggs (b, p), Walter Fancourt (sax, fl) and Matt Lynch (dr, el. perc) have nothing at all to do with their much-loved traditions, but are really blowing the march on "Digital Dream Sequence" by the jazz fraction. This may also be due to the fact that Briggs usually plays bass on Between The Buried and shares a preference for the Mahavishnu Orchestra with his fellow musicians. Nevertheless trioscapes cannot be compared with this group. Rather, their music is broken by the jazz metal mirror, so that the title track and "Hysteria" have wild frills next to free jazz outbursts and galactic psychedelic trips. In "Stab Wounds" trioscapes mercilessly attack their instruments, and yet they direct their aggression into constructive paths. "From Earth To Moon" contrasts minimal patterns in gamelan style with a violently distorted fuzzbass. And "The Jungle" could best be described as a cross between World Music and Progmetal.
