U2, Little Feat, Carly Simon, Sheryl Crow, but above all the Beach Boys around Brian Wilson - they have all benefited from working with Van Dyke Parks since the sixties. It's surprising that this 70 year old singer, composer and instrumentalist has released just five studio albums under his own name after his debut "Song Cycle" in 1967 - until now he has added new material with "Songs Cycled" for the first time since 1989. Although, the songs are only partly new. Half of the twelve tracks were released last year as "7' Singles Series", "The All Golden" is a new recording of Parks' first LP. "Aquarium" (written in 1886 by Camille Saint-Saëns), the sound artist already recorded in 1971 with the Esso Trinidad Steel Band. Parks therefore invites you to take a walk through the music of the past, sometimes with a light breeze like in the opening piece "Dreaming Of Paris" or "Sassafras", sometimes with traditional songs like "Wedding In Madagascar" or the choir piece "The Parting Hand". As different as the tracks may be, every single title, whether orchestral or sparsely orchestrated, reveals the magic hand of the gifted arranger.
